Of course, i knew about the no child left behind act...but when the teacher explained it in detail, i realized there was alot more to it than what i thought it did. It really is all about money. If you reach your "adequate yearly progress" then great, more money for the school. Problem is, if they dont then they take money away. This is insane. Like she said this is like blackmailing our educators, threatening them that if they dont meet this their AYP then they are going to face the consequence of a loss of pay.
She explains the bell curve, which is a naturally occurring thing in nature... some people are going to be above average, many will fall in the middle of this curve, and some will be below average, its just the way things work. This "solution" just creates a bigger problem by setting a goal that just isnt realistic.
The poet's act in my opinion was very moving. He told of how a parent feels with this system and how the children feel when they see that they are not doing well, but being told that its okay because they didnt get an F or a D.
I think the whole system needs to get revamped... especially that everything surrounds money and not centered on what would be good for the children. They are the ones suffering because of the governments mistakes.
